A new lumbar support seating system designed for underground mine workers working loaders and haul trucks has caused in reduced injuries and weakness.
Perth-based Modern Motor Trimmers (MMT), which specializes in suspension seats and seating products for the mining industry, has spent more than five years modifying the pneumatically-operated twin air lumbar support.
The 2 stage lumbar system is incorporated into the backrest of an ISRI premium-quality T-backed seat. It uses the air supply from the seat's incorporated air compressor or the machine's air supply to fully inflate, supporting the operator's lumbar region and creating a buffer towards shock and jarring.
MMT is installing the lumbar system in the premium quality ISRI 150kg-rated seating range, nowadays the only product on the market to have a flexible back rest which can be angled for increased operator comfort and support.
Managing Director Garry Spouge, who founded MMT in 1992, said the firm had refined and started to give the up-to-date seating product in ISRI seats in the last 12 months, as requirement for safer and more comfortable seating technology in the underground mining sector had grown.
"Safety is the number one concern for all mining companies around The great outback, and that definitely includes worker safety and wellbeing, which was the starting point for us in terms of building up this lumbar support system," Mr Spouge said.
"Sore and unstable backs are probably the most frequent reasons for lost time incidents in the workplace, and our lower back support targets the lumbar region, preventing back injuries and ultimately on-the-job weariness."
Mr Spouge said that MMT had already analyzed and manufactured a similar
T backrest for underground mining device, but the prototype did not have an adjustable lumbar support.
"We developed the initial prototype in the middle of 1990's, but the patented system we're now using is suited to an ISRI seat which has incorporated adjustable suspension decreasing to slow the seat suspension down, while a seat isolator reduces the forward and back jarring," he said.
"This seat was also chosen as it's the only one in manufacturing to our knowledge that reclines. Some other companies have tried to start the 'T' back rests, but their seats are non-reclining and this causes a problem when operators need to adjust it for ease
"We're really pleased with our current model, and already the observations we've gained has been extremely positive, and in particular, that it's reducing incidents and fatigue."
Mr Spouge claims that as well as expanding operator comfort and protection, the lumbar support also helps to improve seat life by reducing wear and tear and motivating correct posture.
"Thus, the advantages are substantial, either for the operator and also the employer," he added.
MMT's core market niche is the supply, installation and servicing of premium suspension seats and seating items to the WA mining, developing, construction, engineering and transport sectors.
The industry is Western Australia's only authorized supplier and repairer for German manufacturer ISRI, which is widely recognized as the producer of the world's most advanced driver and passenger seating products.
